Natalie and I were laying on my bed today, pondering the finer points of a potential nap and looking at each other as we are wont to do. Things went a little bit like this:
“What did I tell you last night? I didn’t give you the drunk “I love you” speech, right?” (I had a lot to drink last night. Best friend left for Guatemala for two years.)
“No you didn’t.”
“Good. Because I wanted to tell you something. Sober.”
“What is it, babe?”
“You’re officially in a position where you can break my heart now. Before it would have been a loss–a serious one–but now it’s official. You can break my heart. This is scary.”
“It is kind of scary. But it’s also a safe place, too.”
“Natalie…” (I redirect my gaze upward and catch my breath.) “I love you.”
She smiles really big and I look back at her.
“I really like you a lot, too.”
Silence. She smiles again.
“Just kidding. I love you.”
